I know this have been in the media for quite a time now, but I feel a bit confused by the state of mind some people have in Singapore about the stabbing case in Downtown East.
When I first heard about it from my neighbour, my first thought was, "WHAT? Where the hell they keep their choppers and knives?! You mean these gangsters bring them out everytime they leave the house, just in case someone stares at them and they're ready to fight?!"
This was before other news updates told us it could be gang-related and not just a staring incident.
So, the rational part of me realised that this must have been planned.
Although during the first few days I think the Police/Government sort of tried to cover up the severity of the incident by saying it was due to a staring incident.
What the hell.
I don't think people would just whip out their kitchen knives from their back pockets (or wherever they hide them) just to stab you if you stare at them.
Obviously, it must have been planned right?!
And the person must have sufficiently antagonized the other party to have resulted in so much anger which led to violence.
People don't carry sharp and uncovered/unsheathed knives around when they go out, especially teens.
It's cumbersome and inconvenient.
Like what if they've got to watch a movie and they sit down and the long knife is like damn uncomfortable and maybe cold on their ass?
See?
Common sense.
So it must have been planned.
Like some secret gang thing going on.
I've always known about secret societies in Singapore.
I even attended this history of crime and punishment on secret societies in Singapore talk at the National Museum before.
During the 18th and 19th century, with the new influx of Chinese immigrants (sounds like now right, but I don't think the PRCs are joining gangs though, they've got better things to do, like survive and work for money for their families back in China and once in a while, rape the innocent ->
http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=2974023), the people had to join societies like dialect groups and whatnot for protection, people they knew they could seek help from in times of need, and they
are in a foreign country.
Also, at that time, the British sort of didn't care much about these triad things going on because, the British had better things to do, like earning our tax/port money from imports and exports that time and these triads actually helped to keep the Chinese population (which is very large) in check.
Plus, there is the language barrier.
Yes, anyway, about the gangs.
When I was in secondary school, there were many 'gangsters' in there claiming to be from the 369 (Pa Hai Tong, or whatever hanyupinyin it is) gang. I heard it's like one of the biggest groups in Singapore, etc etc.
I never really thought much about it, like I always thought like it's nothing scary or it's just some stupid gang thing going on, until this happened.
I mean, the same gang that people I knew from school were in.
My god brother himself (whom I've lost contact with since I left school) was in it.
I think the act of being able to physically inflict hurt on someone, hearing them in pain, even when you're riled up with testosterone and anger, is quite horrible.
We learn in psychology that people have more courage to do things when they're with company than alone, I guess this is one example.
I don't get how people can keep saying how pitiful the family of the dead is, when they might not know the true story.
Yes, it's very very sad that he died.
But people who've seen him in school and knew him have said they he's always in trouble, associated with gangs and stuff like that.
I'm not saying he deserved to die, but if you're logical enough, with common sense, you should have realised that this must not have been just a staring incident and that he should have known what he was getting in when he antagonized the other gangsters.
What good would have come out of his reactions right?
And the other thing that the media/police/government might have kept 'secret' from the public that it was he who attacked first, is very annoying.
Why keep that secret?!
Or like how our Police try and keep quiet about kidnapping rings in Singapore?!
You might not want to start a panic among us but if you don't alert us, Singaporeans are going to continue thinking that we're very safe and don't keep a closer eye on our kids!!!!
What happens if it's my niece?!
Anyway, back to the sotry.
So many news headlines was saying how innocent he was, a tragic death etc etc.
Yes, yes, a tragic death, I agree.
"He died because of his love for his friends", his dad was quoted to have said.
Where is the truth?
From my point of view, and I may be wrong, I don't really think he died because he loved his friends, it's because of hormones and bad luck. And most probably he 'loved'/or is too loyal to the gang he's in.
Honestly, I don't know what these teens are doing.
Why aren't they at home studying?
You can argue that with today's society, parents are not always home to monitor their kids, teach them right from wrong, but to the point of acting in violence? Murder?
I mean, what's the point in joining gangs?
You mean, do they want to go Geylang sell pirated DVDs and smuggle drugs/tobacco, whatever it is gangsters do, become pimps, living off their parents' money, even when they're old?
Is it really so cool to have tattoos that brand which gang you're in?
Carrying around knives in your back pocket that can accidentally cut your ass whenever you take a seat?!
What the hell!?
I really mean no disrespect to the dead boy's family, but seriously, I really think people/the media should not portray him in such an innocent light.
I feel people deserve the truth.
Not only gangsters, but like when I see what the younger generation are doing now, and compare what they're doing to what I was doing at my own age, it's like, can they stop doing such stupid things.
Maybe I had depression, or was very angry with the world.
Yes, I sucked it up and kept it to myself.
I knew I had to study hard and get into a University or I'd never survive in Singapore's society or my parent's beating.
Not resort to smoking to supposedly de-stress or because of peer-pressure, or join gangs for the 'cool-ness' factor or because you don't fit in anywhere else, or do drugs, or be like that Justin Bieber.
Yucks, I can't stand his whiny pre-pubescent voice.
And his hair.
Can he study at home, keep quiet and be a proper contribution to society!?
Not sing and make videos about girls.
And talking about rape, I realise that there are so many girls being raped in the world.
It's like we're paying for sins we didn't do in our past lives.
Click the above link.
It's about an 8 year old girl being raped by a 10 and 11 year old boy in London.
10 and 11!!!!
And she's freaking 8 years old only!
What is happening?
Why/how do these boys know what's sex?
Or are daring enough to try raping a girl?
Okay, I don't need you to tell me it's the generation that violence and sex is everywhere, in magazines, television, etc etc. I know all this, but seriously!
Raping and causing other people pain at that age!!??!?
One day, I really hope the standardised punishment for rape in the whole world is castration.
And not chemical castration either.
With no anesthesia given during the process.
See how they like it!
Not jail or caning.
That's not enough.
You mean taxpayers money, or the parents' of the victim pay the government to keep the bastard alive in jail and just suffer a few freaking strokes of the cane?!
He'd probably not feel remorseful anyway.
Can't you just pay like a few dollars to settle your needs in a brothel?!
If you like the idea of being in control and violent in bed, then get the prostitute to bloody role-play with you.
Pathetic idiots.
I HATE RAPISTS.
